Mighty Thrifty Bowl

Bowl_1_zania

Bonjour! I have to tell you about a recent and wonderful find at a thrift store! I had been looking for a small bowl for a while and the ones I liked were expensive (nothing new). I also didn’t want an average bowl. I wanted something of really good quality that wouldn’t make a hole in my pocket. Well, as I perused through the piled goods at a nearby Goodwill store, this pretty, dotted bowl caught my eye. I could tell it was of good quality because the glass was heavy and pristine. The dotted embellishments were also so cute. I had to have it! So, i bought it for a mere $5.

Months later, something fantastic happened. As I was reading the July/August 2013 issue of House Beautiful magazine, I turn to page 22 and BAM! a picture of my thrift store bowl shows up! I said, “Whaaat?” to myself and proceeded to read the caption; Pressed glass in classic design from 1964, reissued by Finland’s iconic littala factory. Two-quart Dewdrop Bowl in Blue, Green, and Clear, 8″ DIA. $65. huset-shop.com.bowl_2_zania

I couldn’t believe my eyes. I grabbed the bowl from my kitchen cabinet and carefully inspected it. “I think it’s the same exact one!” So it retails for $65 and I got it for $5. So cool! Needless to say, it might actually be the same one or it might be a replica, but in my mind that was a Mighty Thrifty find!

What have you found at thrift shops? Show me! I’ve also found many other things that are way more expensive elsewhere. You never know what you could find a thrift shop!

Happy thrifting!

Before & After: Distressed Turquoise Media Console

Before_Turquoise_Media_Console

Hello everyone!!!

I’m very excited to share with you this DIY project. I wanted a nice piece of furniture to hold up our TV but every media center I saw online or in furniture stores was just too conventional, boring and oh so pricey. So, I took it upon myself to make it happen. On one of my Ikea field trips I saw a buffet table that caught my attention. It was large enough for the wall space and it had storage for all our board games. I also needed to make sure it had either a cabinet with glass doors or no doors at all for the digital receivers. With a little imagination and creativity this buffet table was about to become a customized, turquoise media console with a beautiful patina. Your Guide to Temporary Wallpaper

Hi everyone!

Ever since I posted the “Before & After” post on covering my wall-to-wall mirrors with removable wallpaper, I’ve received several emails and questions regarding the options. (You can read the post here). I’m so glad you asked! Using temporary wallpaper is a great way to add personal style to any area of your home without making a full-blown commitment. This is a perfect alternative for renters, kids’ rooms and for those designers that consider their homes a work-in-progress and are always changing their homes. Uhm, me… Here is your guide to temporary wallpaper!

Looking for temporary wallpaper on your search engine can get a little convoluted. You may want to use some of these terms in your search engine; temporary wallpaper, removable wallpaper, wall tiles, wall decals, peel n’ stick tiles, wall stickers, wall murals. The list goes on but these are the most popular names. If you want to cover a large space or an accent wall, I recommend you use the wall tiles or the murals. The decals and stickers tend to be smaller in scale and are usually in the shape of an object or words/phrases.

There are many options when it comes to temporary wallpaper. Solid colors, patterns, prints, words, borders and they all have one thing in common. They are easy to install and easy to remove. You don’t need to call a professional and no adhesive or scraper is necessary. Some other great uses for temporary wallpaper include adhering it to a piece of furniture like a tabletop, or as a backdrop inside bookshelves, sticking it to a wall niche, and even attaching it to kitchen appliances! You can put these stickers just about anywhere!

Where to find temporary wallpaper?

Here are some of my favorite online stores that offer fabulous temporary wallpaper: Chasing Paper, Wallpops!, Spoonflower, Design Your Wall & 2Modern. Their designs have all been shown on this post. You can click on the images and it will take you directly to the item’s location on the site. Decals are also available in a store near you! I’ve found that the best selections are in Target and Ikea. Take this Jonathan Adler Decal from Target, for example. So pretty!

Miss Ideas Webisode #5 – Tres formas de arreglar flores

Miss_Ideas_Yahoo_Tres_formas_de_arreglar_flores_2

This week’s Miss Ideas episode on Yahoo En Español teaches you how to make three different flower arrangements. One arrangement is tall, the other short and bunched up and the last consists of floating flowers. This was fun to make. For filming purposes we did not include the part where you should cut the flowers’ stems under running water. Also, you don’t have to follow the rules exactly as they appear on the screen. Those are meant to be guidelines. You can do whatever you want and get your own version of flower arrangements.

Before & After: Covering Wall-to-Wall Mirrors

Before_Peacock_Wallpaper Before_Peacock_Wallpaper_2 Before_Peacock_Wallpaper_1

My apartment is made up of various DIY projects. Covering the dining room wall-to-wall mirror was no exception. The only thing that I liked about the mirror was that it reflected the light and greenery from the outdoors but that wasn’t enough of a reason to leave it up. I rent this apartment so obviously I couldn’t tear down the damn thing. Sooo, I covered it. How, you ask? With removable wallpaper. Genius! Miss Ideas Webisode #2 “Recilando revistas viejas”

Miss Ideas Episode 2 SnapshotWebisode #2 of Miss Ideas is up on Yahoo!! Click on any of the images to view the video.

This idea was taken from a book that I’ve had since 2010 called Playing with Books: The Art of Upcycling, Deconstructing, and Reimagining the Book by Jason Thompson. This is a beautiful book filled with great ideas on how to use books to make art. I made two place mats for my kitchen table out of old magazines (like the one I made in the video) and surprisingly they’ve lasted 3 years! I’ve spilled water, milk, crumbs and maple syrup on them and they actually hold up pretty darn well. The best part is, that if you damage a section of the place mat, you can easily replace it by taking out the damaged rolls and placing new ones!!! It works just like the rug/carpet tiles!

I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did making it.

Miss_Ideas_Recicla_revistas_viejas

El segundo Webisode de Miss Ideas ya este publicado en Yahoo! Puedes verlo si le haces click a cualquiera de las imagenes arriba.

La idea detrás de esta webisode vino de un libro que compré en el 2010. Se llama, Playing with Books: The Art of Upcycling, Deconstructing, and Reimagining the Book escrito por Jason Thompson. Este libro es verdaderamente impresionante. Te enseña como hacer arte con solo utilizar libros y/o páginas de revistas, música, etc. Yo hice 2 de estos mismo manteles individuales  que hago en el video y me han durado 3 años. ¿Increíble, no?
